A Balanced Approach

To prevent ankle sprains from recurring during weight-bearing activities, it is crucial that rehabilitation includes motion, flexibility, and strengthening exercises.

In addition, it is very important to include exercises that are geared toward (re)training the body's sense of its position in space. This predominantly unconscious capacity, known as "proprioception," enables us to walk in the dark without losing our balance. Because injury to muscles and ligaments can compromise this ability, it is important to address it during rehab. A form of proprioceptive exercise known as "balance training" has proven itself able to prevent ankle re-injury, as well as reduce the risk of ligament problems among athletes. It may also help to improve mobility and prevent falls (and injury) among all patients.

If you have suffered an injury, a stroke, or had an operation, you may need physical therapy to help you regain your strength, motion, and fl exibility. Have your physician refer you to our facility by calling (949) 429-3220. Together we will develop a personalized exercise program to get you back to where you want to be. We also provide home treatments for those who are physically unable to come to our office because our goal is to not let anyone fall through the cracks. We are conveniently located at 27136 B Paseo Espada, Suite 1103, San Juan Capistrano.

P.S. Balance training also improves postural stability after a stroke.
