Sneaking Up From Behind

The searing, sometimes debilitating, pain of sciatica characteristically radiates down the leg from the buttock to the calf.

This symptom may be accompanied by numbness and weakness in the affected leg. The most common culprit of sciatica is a protruding disc in the lower spine that compresses the sciatic nerve. However, it is estimated that 20% of all cases of sciatica can actually be attributed to the piriformis muscle. Residing deep within the buttock, this little-known muscle helps to turn the hips out and raise the leg to the side. Under some circumstances, it can entrap the sciatic nerve and compress it to cause pain. "Piriformis syndrome" can be diagnosed by adduction, internal rotation, and flexion of the hip joint.

If you suffer from sciatica, find out how physical therapy can help. At our facility we will do a complete medical history, body mechanics, and postural screening to develop a treatment plan designed to control or eliminate your symptoms. Our services include solutions for arthritis, back and neck disorders, balance disorders, chronic and acute pain, neurological disorders and more. We're pleased to offer home care services and innovative treatments for active seniors. Call 949-429-3220 today.

P.S. Piriformis syndrome may arise from causes ranging from a hard fall on the buttocks to leg-length discrepancy (one leg shorter than the other).
