Goodbye Charley

The common term "charley horse" refers to involuntary leg muscle contractions that will not cease.

Possible causes include dehydration, mineral deficiencies (calcium, magnesium, or potassium), intense workouts that do not conclude with stretching, or even medications such as cholesterol-lowering "statin" drugs. If you experience charley horses on a regular basis, you might help yourself by drinking water before, during, and after exercise. It may also be of benefit to eat bananas or oranges for the added potassium that they bring to your system. Also, try finishing up your workouts with a comprehensive stretching routine. After particularly intense workouts, try drinking a sports drink to replace the minerals that you lost through perspiration.
