Treating Pulmonary Hypertension Patients

Pulmonary hypertension is high blood pressure in the arteries that supply the lungs. Traditional management of this serious condition largely ruled out exercise because it was thought that exercise worsened right-side heart failure due to increased pressure on the pulmonary arteries.

However, there is now research that shows that exercise and respiratory training, along with medical therapy, can significantly improve pulmonary hypertension patients' performance on a six-minute walk. The exercise intervention included low-workload exercise, seven days a week, which was supervised by physical therapists. Exercise included interval bicycle ergonomic training, walking, dumbbell training, yoga, and respiratory training. After fifteen weeks of this training, patients reported significant improvement in function and quality of life.
