Don't End Up Flat On Your Back

Recent research involving patients over age 65 in VA hospitals shows that they spend far too much time flat on their backs. In fact, these older hospital patients averaged only 18 minutes of standing or walking over a 6-hour period.

This inactivity, over even a short hospital stay, can have an adverse impact on older patients. These seniors may lose 1 to 5 percent of their muscle mass every 24 hours of bed rest. They can become orthostatic (sustained decrease of blood pressure that produces lightheadedness and dizziness upon standing up) within 24 to 48 hours. These findings should prompt older hospital patients, in particular, to consult with a physical therapist about the necessary courses of action during hospital stays.

If you or someone you know is going to become bed-bound due to illness, pregnancy, or injury, remember that a physical therapist can help you understand the negative side effects and how to avoid them as much as possible. At our facility we handle all types of cases, specializing in programs for active seniors and geriatric conditions. Call 949-429-3220 to learn more.
