That's Stretching It A Bit!

Basically, there are four types of stretching. Static stretching is a sustained stretch, which is held and leveraged with another limb or against gravity to deepen the stretch.

Ballistic stretching involves placing the body in a stretched position, followed with small bounces (intended to deepen the stretch). An active stretch is one in which the opposing muscle group contracts and pulls the body into a stretch. Finally, a dynamic stretch involves moving the body or a limb through a range motion. While it was once thought that static stretching before exercise would prevent injury, it is now known that performing a static stretch prior to any type of muscle contraction slows down and weakens the muscles involved, worsening performance.

P. S. Active and dynamic stretching are better techniques for warming up than static stretches because they prepare the body for exercise.
