Are You Prone To Ankle Sprain?

If you are a runner or jogger who supinates (tends to strike the ground with the outside edges of your feet), you are likely to be more prone to spraining your ankles.

While a natural amount of supination occurs during the push-off phase of the running cycle, excessive supination strains the muscles and tendons that stabilize the ankles. As a result, a partial or complete tear of the ankle ligaments on the outside of the foot can occur. Thus, if you roll your ankles repeatedly, the ankle will become progressively more unstable. To reduce your risk of ankle sprains over time, ask the physical therapist about strengthening exercises for the tendons and muscles in the feet and ankles.

Here at our facility, we treat athletic injuries, strains, and sprains, and we work with athletes to teach them how to avoid injuries common to their sport. We have a special, innovative program for working with active seniors in particular. Whether you are a runner, a golfer, or a tennis player, you can benefit from strengthening exercises that are designed specifically for your game. Call 949-429-3220 today. Our clinic is located at 27136 B Paseo Espada, Suite 1103, San Juan Capistrano. We also provide the THOR approach in treating neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders.

P.S. The point of taping or wrapping your ankle is to support the area and limit motion that would otherwise cause further damage, not to enable you to run on it.
