Back To The Swing Of Things

Patients with replaced knees may want to think twice before heading back to the golf links. A round of golf after knee surgery can exert as much stress(or more) on the repaired knee as jogging 18 holes.

So say researchers who developed an electronic knee implant device that measures compressive, torque, and shear force during activities. The device showed that a golf swing placed 4.5 times the body weight on the forward knee and 3.2 times the body weight on the other knee. Biking, on the other hand, was found to exert only 1.3 times the body weight on the knee. Additionally, the physical therapist may help the patient modify activities in ways that make them less stressful on knees.
