Watching Your Back

About four out of five Americans experience back pain at some point in their lives. However, with a few preventive steps, many episodes of back pain can be averted.

The part of the back that is most vulnerable to aches and injuries is the lower (or lumbar) region because common activities such as bending and sitting place stress on the discs that lie between vertebrae in that area. To avoid problems in these areas, it helps to increase the strength and flexibility of all the muscles in the body's midsection, including the muscles of the abdomen, which help support the spine from the front. The stomach crunch is a good exercise for strengthening these muscles.

Of course, preventing back pain sounds good, but if you're already suffering from an aching back then you need to call right away. Our professional therapists can help you, whether your pain was caused by a fall, an auto accident, or a sports injury. We can also demonstrate a set of core strengthening exercises that will prevent a recurrence of back pain. Call 949-429-3220 today to learn more about our wide range of services or visit our office at 27136 B Paseo Espada, Suite 1103, San Juan Capistrano.

A special message to our patient Jay D. of San Juan Capistrano: Continue to observe proper body mechanics and good posture (ie. chin tuck, stomach in) and of course, keep doing the floor exercises.

P.S. Pilates exercises are designed to strengthen core muscles, which are essential in providing support for the spine.
