Driving Ambition

After patients have experienced orthopedic surgery or injury, they may want to comprehensively assess their ability to drive before attempting to do so.

A physical therapist may be able to make the determination as to whether a limb is strong enough to meet the demands of driving, but driving is a multi-system task. Abilities also vary from patient to patient. There are no universal guidelines for determining when a patient is ready to drive, and only nineteen states have testing procedures for patients. With this in mind, patients may want to consult with a physical therapist about their driving fitness at the earliest possible time. Occupational therapy provides an effective means of preparing drivers for their return to the road.

Part of the recovery process is figuring out what activities are safe after your surgery or injury. Our friendly therapists have the expertise necessary to determine whether you're fit to drive or resume your favorite sport without hurting yourself. We will work with you, one-on-one, to create a recovery plan tailored to your unique set of needs, whether you're recovering from a heart attack, surgery, or a car accident. Call us at 949-429-3220 to make appointment or visit our facility at 27136 B Paseo Espada, Suite 1103, San Juan Capistrano.

P.S.To make their return to driving less stressful, patients should begin their efforts on less-traveled roads and in parking lots.
