Like A Kick In The Shins

Because shinsplints (characterized by pain in the front part of the lower leg) is so often associated with beginners' attempts at running and walking for exercise, experienced runners may think they will not develop the problem.

The fact is, however, that medial tibial stress syndrome, which is the most common cause of shinsplints usually occurs as a result of overtraining. With this in mind, at the first sign of shinsplints, runners and walkers should take some time off from their exercise regimen. To gain greater flexibility in the affected area, it may help to sit with knees bent 90 degress, with heels on the ground, while rotating the forefoot upward, downward, and toward the outside. To prevent relapses of shinsplints, runners and walkers should restart their exercise regimen slowly and build mileage gradually. Strengthening exercises are also recommended.
