Not So Cheery News

Young female athletes, their parents, and coaches may be surprised to know that cheerleading accounted for two-thirds of all catastrophic injuries experienced by high school and college female athletes over the past 25 years.

In the 25-year period studied, there were 103 fatal, disabling, or serious injuries reported among female high school athletes, the vast majority of which (67) were cheerleading-related. During the same period, there were 39 such injuries among female college athletes, 26 due to cheerleading. These numbers are largely attributable to the fact that cheerleading involves gymnastic-type stunts that have a high degree of difficulty. Not only must they be taught and undertaken with competence and care, cheerleaders should tend to their bodies in a corresponding manner.
